A real composite index tracking how New York City construction filing and permit activity is trending month to month — rebased so every reader compares the same relative scale, computed live from the same NYC DOB data every other page on this site is built from.

Composite index, trailing 24 months. 100 = the average of every complete month shown here — not a fixed historical base year, since DOB's public feeds don't reach back far enough to anchor one honestly. The lighter bar is the current, still-incomplete month.
This index averages two independent sub-indices — DOB Job Application Filings and DOB Permit Issuance — each rebased so its own average across every complete month in the 24-month window shown here equals 100 (the same index-number technique BLS uses for the Producer Price Index this site already surfaces on Materials Pricing). It is a relative activity gauge — how this month compares to this window's own average — not a units-comparable dollar or permit-count figure, and the current calendar month is excluded from the rebasing average since it isn't over yet.
