Methodology

This ranks the businesses (and, where a filing names one directly, individuals) listed as owner on NYC Department of Buildings New Building and Major Alteration job filings from the current and prior year, by the sum of each filing's own filed construction cost. It is not a revenue, net-worth, or portfolio-value ranking, and doesn't capture ownership held through separate single-purpose LLCs that never appear as the same name twice — a common real-estate structure NYC's public data can't see through. Minor alteration, sign, and equipment filings are excluded, and older filings roll off each January, so this reads as "who's actively developing right now," not an all-time cumulative ranking. Refreshed nightly rather than re-scanned on every visit, since building it means summing filed cost across thousands of individual filings.
