No. Constructel NYC is an independent publication and is not affiliated with the City of New York or the Department of Buildings. It republishes and analyzes data that NYC itself publishes as open data.

Where does Constructel NYC's construction data come from?

Primarily NYC Open Data (Socrata), specifically the DOB Job Application Filings and DOB Permit Issuance datasets, plus DOB Safety Violations, ECB Violations, Stop Work Orders, and DOB Stalled Construction Sites for compliance context, the Recent Contract Awards and Current Solicitations datasets for procurement, the SBS Certified Business List for M/WBE firms, the NYC Parks Capital Project Tracker for major infrastructure, and Jobs NYC Postings for job listings. Wages come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics; layoff/closure data comes from the NYS Department of Labor WARN Dashboard.

How often is Constructel NYC updated?

Most data — filings, permits, contractor rankings, contract awards, job postings — is queried live from NYC Open Data on every page load, so it reflects the source dataset in real time. Two sources (BLS wage data and the NYS WARN Dashboard) don’t offer a live API and are refreshed manually on the dates shown on their respective pages.

How are companies ranked?

By DOB permit volume — the number of construction permits a company has pulled citywide. That's the only company-level activity metric NYC's public data supports. It is not a revenue, quality, or safety ranking, and no such ranking is shown or implied anywhere on the site.

Does Constructel NYC show every construction project in New York City?

No single page shows everything — each page applies a specific, disclosed filter (for example, The Skyline shows only New Building filings with an issued permit and DOB activity in the last 3 years; Future Developments shows only filings still in plan review). The exact methodology is stated on each page.

Is there an API?

Yes — a free, keyless JSON/CSV API at /api/v1 covering contract awards, open solicitations, DOB filings and permits, contractor and developer rankings, neighborhood activity, monthly trends, and construction wages. See /developers-api for the full reference and example requests.

Does Constructel NYC cover federal construction projects in NYC?

No, and this is a real, structural gap rather than an oversight: federally-owned buildings (GSA courthouses and office buildings, VA facilities, etc.) generally aren't subject to NYC DOB permitting at all, so they don't appear in DOB Job Application Filings or DOB Permit Issuance — the two datasets this site is built on. Federal project data would require a separate integration with GSA's own systems, which this build doesn't have yet.
