Methodology
Project Type classifies each filing using DOB's own fields: Residential/Commercial from the filing's occupancy classification, Public Sector from the owner-type field (NYC/NY State agencies, NYCHA, HPD, DOE, etc.), and Solar Energy from a keyword match on the filing's job description. These are real DOB-recorded fields, not a self-reported category. Federal construction (GSA buildings, military facilities) isn't a filterable category here because it's largely exempt from local DOB permitting altogether — it doesn't appear in this dataset at all. For real federal contract/construction spending data, see USAspending.gov, the federal government's own primary source — searchable by agency, location, and award type.
