Every figure below is drawn live from DOB's Local Law 84 Energy & Water Data Disclosure dataset — buildings 25,000 sq ft and larger are required to file annually to the EPA's ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, and this is that filing data, largely as submitted by the owner. Averages and leaderboards exclude rows with a missing score/EUI/emissions field and rows outside a generous plausibility band (Site EUI 0–1,000 kBtu/ft², GHG intensity 0–100 kgCO₂e/ft²) — a real check applied because this self-reported dataset does contain occasional unit-entry outliers (one live example: a small property category's average was skewed roughly 15x by a single mistyped Site EUI before this filter). - What is Local Law 84 energy benchmarking?
- Local Law 84 of 2009 requires owners of NYC buildings 25,000 sq ft and larger to measure and report their annual energy and water use through the EPA's ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool every year. The figures on this page — ENERGY STAR score, Site Energy Use Intensity (EUI), and GHG emissions intensity — come directly from those owner-submitted filings, published by DOB.
- Does this page show whether a building complies with Local Law 97?
- No. Local Law 97 sets a maximum emissions-intensity limit for each building occupancy group, stepping down on a fixed schedule, and DOB has not published a live, queryable dataset of that limit table. This page shows each building's real measured GHG emissions and intensity from its own LL84 filing — a compliance determination requires comparing that figure to the correct occupancy-group limit for the correct compliance period, which isn't shown here. - How current is this data?
- LL84 filings are annual and lag the calendar year they cover by several months.
- Is this data independently verified?
- No. Every figure is self-reported by the building owner or their agent to ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, then published by DOB largely as submitted. DOB does spot-review filings, but this site does not independently audit any individual building's numbers. Implausible outlier values (a small number of rows with obvious unit-entry errors) are filtered out of the averages and leaderboards below — see the methodology note above the borough table.
